I've been involved in dog sports and dog clubs since I got my first purebred dog in 1972. She was an Alaskan Malamute and we took obedience training classes at our local kennel club and I was hooked although I was in graduate school and had no time to compete. I finished my Ph.D., then joined my local kennel club and theAmerican Belgian Tervuren Club in 1978 when I got my first Tervuren.
I am now a life member of the Toledo Kennel Clubwhere I've taught obedience, rally and conformation over the last 20 years. I was approved as a provisional judge for rally in 2004 and found that I really enjoy judging as well as competing. I look on judging as an extension of teaching. Both my current dogs have rally titles although I find showing in RAE classes, teaching and judging is demanding on my time.
In this column I hope to provide balanced commentary on rally and provoke some thoughtful discussion about this new sport and what it can bring to the dog community
