I attended my first Obedience class when I was 12 years old. My dog (Taku) was a very large 6-month-old German Shepherd mix – so large that he was taller than me. At first the instructor told me I was too young to handle the dog, but my mom convinced her otherwise. I persevered at training Taku, and when we participated in our first Obedience match, the door to the world of Dog Obedience opened wide!
I wanted only one thing for my 16th birthday - a purebred Golden Retriever. I had gone to a Golden Gate Kennel Club benched show at the Cow Palace in Northern California and at that show, I saw Suzi Bluford with her famous Golden Retriever, Streaker. When I saw that dog, I knew that this was the breed for me. My parents came through for my birthday and found me the last pick puppy in a litter of 12. I named her Nuggett and she would become my first OTCH dog.
Fast forward...I have now earned 8 OTCHs with my Goldens. I have been fortunate that a number of them have taken me to even bigger dreams. “Tess” (OTCH Splashdown Tess Of Culynwood OBHF OD WCX) and I won the 1985 Gaines Classic. In 2007, “Dream” (NOC OTCH DD's Dreams Do Come True UDX26 OGM RE TDX JH VCD1 CCA OBHF OD VCX WCX) went on to win the 2007 AKC NOC (National Obedience Championship), and Dream’s daughter “Sliver” (RNC OTCH DD's Slice Of Pie UDX2 OM5 RAE TDX JH NFP VCD3 CCA OBHF OD VCX WC) won the 2015 AKC RNC (Rally National Championship).
With my Goldens, I have earned forty-two perfect scores of 200. Thirty-two of those were with “Dream.” In 2005, I decided to give back to the sport I love and became an Obedience and Rally judge.
My husband Bill and I operate DD’s Dog Training in Lodi, CA. We both teach Obedience, Rally, Tracking & Agility full time. We also hunt our dogs and enjoy trying any new sport with them. In 2009, we built our own training hall, which we named The Dream Big Training Center. With the building, up and running we could start producing our training videos, and we now have an extensive offering of training DVDs and streamed videos. Your welcome to visit my website to see what available.
What we enjoy most of all is helping people learn how to build a successful relationship with their own dog, no matter what they’ve chosen or what activities they want to pursue. Our facility is located in Lodi, CA. Feel free to contact me any time you have questions.
