Two Versions of F&F!

Beginning in September we're going to try publishing F&F in two different versions.  You can continue reading F&F in it's traditional "PDF Issue" format if you want.  However, for curious dogs check out our New F&F WebMag!  This version is optimized for portable devices but it works great on computers too.  The WebMag doesn't look like a traditional publication but it's sure easier to navigate and read.  Especially on smartphones!

A PAL Listing

By Marilyn Miller

A PAL number gives people a chance to compete in AKC events. Perhaps you have a purebred dog that cannot be registered with the AKC. This number gives all purebred dogs a chance to compete.

Some reasons a dog cannot be registered with the AKC could be because: the dog may be the product of an unregistered litter or have unregistered parents. The dog's papers may have been with held by the breeder or lost by the owner. The dog may have been surrendered to a shelter or rescue group. or the dog could have been "lost". The PAL number allows unregistered dogs of purebred breeds to compete in Companion and Sporting events.

The following is a list of all the events in which a PAL dog may participate:

  • Agility (all breeds)
  • Canine Good Citizen (all breeds)
  • Coursing Ability (all breeds)
  • Earthdog Trials (small Terriers and Dachshunds)
  • Herding Tests and Trials (Herding breeds, Rottweilers and Samoyds)
  • Hunt Tests ( most sporting breeds and Standard Poodles)
  • Junior Showmanship (all breeds)
  • Lure Coursing (Sighthounds)
  • Obedience (all breeds)Rally (all breeds)
  • Scent work (all breeds)
  • Therapy Dogs (all breeds)
  • Tracking Tests (all breeds)
  • Trick Dog (all breeds)

Once you are enrolled in the PAL program, entering an AKC event is the same as with a registered dog with the exception of having an AKC registered number, you would list your dog's PAL number on the show entry form. Applying for a PAL number is easy. An application foro enrollment may be downloaded or by emailing the AKC. When submitting a completed PAL application the following must be included: Two color photographs of the dog. One full - front photo showing the face, and the other view showing a full side profile of the dog standing on a flat surface (not grass).

You must also show proof from a veterinarian that the dog has been spayed or neutered. A non - refundable $35.00 application fee is required. Mail this to the American Kennel Club/PAL, P.O. Box  900059,  Raleigh, N.C. 27675-9059.

Enrollment is easy and the benefits to you and your dog will be endless. For more information about PAL numbers email ilp@akc.org.
