As a Naval flight instructor in Pensacola, Florida fifty years ago I got a chocolate miniature poodle and quickly realized we needed obedience help.  Back then E.V. Russell offered free puppy lessons and that started us on the dog training path.   

I was recalled to Buffalo, NY by American Airlines and joined Western Lakes DTC with advanced obedience under Tony V.   We showed in Canada most of the time while living there but then we moved to Chicago where many of the top obedience people showed and trained. After living there a short time we moved to the Dallas area, training with the Chaillots at Houn House Kennels.  Finally we ended up in Mineola, Tx where my wife and I help others train and compete at trials.   

Yvonne Piefer bred four of our Tanbark Golden Retrievers. Three became OTCHs, while one is still a puppy.   Trap is a six year old Golden who became an obedience champion at two years and won a regional competition shortly thereafter.   He did have a rough start when he leaped off of our porch at eight weeks old and broke his left rear leg.   Our vet put a huge cast on it and he recovered in minimum time.  

We train daily but only for short time durations.  We always include fun things to build stamina and release pent up energy.  The dogs always enjoy chasing bumpers and basic agility obstacles.

Trap is a joy to own and train.   He loves to retrieve and looks beautiful on land or in the water.  He’ll chase balls or bumpers until the thrower is worn out!

Trap loves interacting with others.  He smiles at everyone and will hug anyone who’ll let him.  If you’re not careful though you just might find him begging to be in your lap.  Trap knows who’s behind my mask and wearing one hasn’t negatively affected our teamwork at all.  He’s just glad to be back in the ring!
